Greater Works Study Buddy founder Anna Anderson retires after many years of service
Years ago, Anna Anderson's interest was sparked during a Bridging the Community meeting when conversation turned to creating more Study Buddy programs in the area. She felt she had to do whatever she could to bring the program to the Greater Works Ministry, and she did. Now, she's ready to retire after seven years of dedicated work with her Greater Works Study Buddy program.
The tutoring program enrolls kids from kindergarten to 10th grade. The students are personally picked up in a van driven by Anderson on Thursday evenings and they stay until 7:30 p.m.
During that time they work on their homework with the 11 volunteer tutors who range in age from high school students to adults. According to Anderson, the homework loads can get pretty heavy. But if children finish their homework, they are encouraged to read until it's time to go.
Joan Holliday, one of Anderson's co-workers who helped her begin Greater Works Study Buddies, praised Anderson's work. "It's magical to see so many kids lively and energetic and at the same time, so orderly. Anna commands respect in a way that comes from love, not authority," said Holliday.
Anderson said the program has been rewarding to her, and she loves seeing the positive results from her students.
"I like to read the letters the kids write about the program," she said. "One young man was making bad grades and came up to A's and B's so he wrote a 'What I like about Study Buddies' letter."
Some kids have attended Anderson's program straight through its seven years. and many kids use it on-and-off. Currently, the program has over 20 regular students attending. There is a Study Buddy Program for four churches in this area, including Anderson's Greater Works Ministry. According to Holliday, the program is a community-based effort and is in partnership with the churches.
"Anna is one of the most committed women I've ever experienced. She does it with such love and affection and understanding. She really joins with the spirit of the child," Holliday said.

Congregations share again as church reopens
09/26/2001
KENNETT SQUARE -- The congregation of Christ Temple Church on Birch Street returned to its building Sunday after a summer away from the structure. During that time, the members shared pews and services with the Presbyterian Church of Kennett Square on Broad Street.
Parishioners and clergy praised the alliance of the two parishes.
Christ Temple has a mostly black membership, while the Presbyterian church is mostly white.
Presbyterian Pastor Stephen Gutridge told his congregation one summer day, "They say 11 o'clock Sunday morning is the most segregated hour of the week. Well, not here."
Christ Temple Pastor Mark Avery said he loves being back at the newly renovated building. "We will miss our brothers and sisters at the Kennett Presbyterian Church, though," he said.
"I can't emphasize enough how much each church grew," Stephen Gutridge, senior pastor at the Kennett Presbyterian Church said.
The racial and denominational walls crumbled as the churches came together, and that really excited people, he added.
The two churches worshipped together during the Presbyterian church's 11 a.m. service from April through Labor Day.
Then they cametogether again on Sunday to celebrate at Christ Temple.
The morning began with both congregations assembled at the Presbyterian church. A motorcade formed, and the congregations traveled as one group over to Christ Temple.
Gutridge led the way, blowing through a shofar, a ram's horn trumpet.
At Christ Temple there was a feeling of excitement similar to visiting a friend who has a new house, Gutridge said.
Pastor Avery preached and the Christ Temple praise band performed the worship music.
Gutridge and his wife received gifts in thanks for their hospitality.
Although it was the Presbyterian church that helped out Christ Temple, both churches benefited, Gutridge said, adding, "It has been one of the best experiences that all of us have had."
The two churches have vowed to continue co-sponsoring events, such as their annual Praise in the Park held at Anson B. Nixon Park each August.
Leon Spencer, mayor of Kennett Square and choir director at the Kennett Presbyterian Church, agreed with Gutridge and said the joint worship was a learning experience for both congregations.
"Both churches learned a lot about each other, all in the course of fulfilling the tenets of scripture, which say love one another," he added.
"I believe when this arrangement began there were some apprehensions due to different styles of worship, but the bottom line is it is the same God we serve," he said.
Christ Temple underwent about $125,000 worth of repairs including waterproofing, new rest rooms, new vinyl floors, upgraded office space, new floors in the office and new lighting.

Kennett Square Church Family set to Mark 50th Anniversary the Pastor's Wife is a Granddaughter of a Founder Who Remains a Bright Presence at Christ Temple Pentecostal.
09/29/2000
John Corr, INQUIRER STAFF WRITER
The Rev. C. Mark Avery rises when Catherine Norton comes into his office.
It's not just that she is 77 and 40 years his senior, or even that she is his wife's grandmother. There is also the fact that she may be considered the "mother" of the church he serves as pastor.
Slight, bright and quick to smile, Norton goes into Mr. Avery's office in the basement of the Christ Temple Pentecostal Church on Birch Street in Kennett Square to talk about the big celebration of the 50th anniversary of the birth of the church.
She was present at the birth. In fact, the dozen or so believers who formed the nucleus of the church met for prayer and Bible study in her home on Mill Road, Kennett Square, before becoming an official congregation of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World.
"We met first at my house," she said. "Then we found this vacant, rundown church in Unionville, but we couldn't stay there long."
The congregation was officially formed in 1950. Two years later, the group, which then numbered about 30, raised the money to build the Birch Street church. That same year, the church's Inspirational Gospel Choir was formed. The first service at the new church was on Easter Sunday 1952. Because the upstairs sanctuary wasn't finished, the service was held in the basement.
In a way, the sanctuary is still being finished. This week the interior was painted and carpeted just in time for the birthday celebration that begins this evening.
There will be special services and fellowship meetings every night, and the observance concludes on Oct. 8 with a birthday banquet at the Best Western Concordville Inn. Pentecostal Bishop Fernwood Jones will be the banquet speaker.
Mr. Avery went to the church in 1985 as a lay member of the congregation.
"I had no inkling that I would ever, ever become pastor," he said.
In 1987, the Rev. Allen Tate, then pastor, appointed him a deacon.
"I thought it was a very high honor," he said, "especially since my father and grandfather had been deacons at the Rose of Sharon Pentecostal Church in Philadelphia."
He entered Bible school and began studying for the ministry. He preached his first sermon in 1989 and became pastor in 1992.
His mostly African American congregation has grown to 150, and he now serves a busy church whose members are very much involved in community projects.
"It's a warm, loving and cordial congregation," he said, "and one that keeps a balance between church and community activity. I urge everyone to get out of the comfort zone of our church building, to touch and embrace the community and become part of the heartbeat of the community."
In this regard, Mr. Avery has led by example. He is a member of the Kennett Consolidated school board and of the Kennett YMCA Board of Directors.
A major activity for the congregation in recent weeks has been reaching out to former members of the congregation to bring them back to the church for the anniversary celebration.
"Many of the original founders are still with us, and we hope to see them all during the coming week," he said.
